DIY Music Wall & Sensory Table

Last weekend, while at my friend Morgan's house for a barbecue, I was pleasantly surprised by this awesome music wall and sensory table she built for her daughter. Everything was so neatly put together and made completely from scrap pieces of wood, thrifty finds from the dollar store, other on sale finds, and a little weekend time.

To make the music wall, which all the kids {big and little} loved, she nailed two painted, long wood planks to the fences. She hung different kitchen items, musical instruments, and wind chimes using twine to the planks of wood. Using different sticks and spoons, the kids were able to get creative, test new sounds and make sweet music.

To make the sensory table, Morgan cut two rectangles out of a rectangular piece of wood and attached 6 legs. She set in two plastic storage bins and filled one with water and the other with play yard sand. You can find some here. Using storage bins makes them easy to clean and easy to cover when not in use. And in my opinion, the best part about making a sensory table instead of buying one is that you can customize the size and shape of your table to meet your children's height needs.

Morgan's hubby also got creative and built a simple climbing area using thin wood planks, rope netting and outdoor fabric. Way easier than a traditional swing set and perfect for younger aged children.

Overall, my kids were over the moon playing with sand but in it (thank you) and putting on a show for the adults with the music wall. Needless to say, that in the coming months, something like this will probably be popping up in my yard, too!

Week in Pictures

Yay, it's Friday yet again!
This week flew by, partly because of the long weekend we had.
I was going through my phone and found some sweet pictures from the week.

Can anyone else believe it's going to be June in 3 days?? I feel like it was just Christmas!
Also, June 1 marks the six month anniversary of this blog, yay!!
I hope everyone has a safe & wonderful weekend

Simple, Homemade Ice Cream Cake

Over the weekend we had a birthday party for Luaks..he's turning 5 next month!
I knew I wanted an ice cream cake for his party and figured I could just make one myself.
I cruised around Pinterest for a while getting ideas, until I found this ice cream cake recipe using ice cream sandwiches... genius!
The thing I've always loved most about any ice cream cake is the combo of cake and cream. So I made some modifications to the recipes I found and came up with a pretty simple ice cream cake recipe using both cake mix and ice cream sandwiches. The best part is, there are so many variations and substitutes that can be made to this recipe to make it work for everyone {I'm thinking gluten free options and maybe a little strawberry shortcake action!}

  • 1 box white cake mix and ingredients listed on box {oil, eggs, water}
  • 1 box ice cream sandwiches
  • 1 pint vanilla ice cream
  • 2 containers white frosting
  • Pre heat oven at 350
  • Prepare cake batter according to box instructions {I substituted the oil with yogurt}
  • Divide cake batter in half
  • Cook cake half in a 9x13 cake pan/dish {if you have 2 pans, cook halves simultaneously, if only 1 pan, cook one and then let sit while other half is cooking in pan}
  • Leave one cake in cake pan as the bottom layer
  • Once cake has completely cooled, apply a layer of frosting
  • Next, layer ice cream sandwiches over frosting
  • Fill in any gaps with vanilla ice cream
  • Now, at this point you can either do a thin layer of ice cream or frosting...I found frosting to be more sweet but better at holding the cake together
  • Place the top cake layer on and cover with frosting
  • Clean up the sides and with a butter knife or spoon and place in the freezer for at least an hour
  • Serve and Enjoy!!
