Basilica of Saint Servatius |
It doesn't matter what religion you belong to, it's pretty hard not to appreciate the beauty and detail of an old church. One of the main reasons I love Europe so much is the history; the old buildings, the statues, the cobblestone lanes, and the churches. I get a kick out of turning a corner and stopping dead in my tracks because before me is a church built in the 11th century. I marvel in the details of the Gothic area architecture of these churches, and wonder who has visited these impressive sights. I also think that it's kind of special that even through two world wars and a slew of battles and wars, these churches still stand today with little modifications.
Over the week, I was able to just walk through the city of Maastricht, here in the Netherlands, and really take the time to study the details of these beauties. Salzburg, Austria (which I will be going to in a little over a week) is my all time favorite city, full of old Gothic style churches and buildings. However, Maastricht is running a close second.

I agree, the old churches were one of the highlights for me of Europe. When we were in Spain, we lived two doors from a 13 century church and out girls went to their youth group in the annex building of it. I loved everything about walking around in our neighborhood.
