When we were in Brussels a couple of weeks ago, I was surprised by all the sweet shops, chocolate shops, beer gardens and waffle stands. I knew that Belgium was famous for their sweet, thick waffles and that Belgium chocolate and beer was some what well known. But I really underestimated the impact that these treats have on the tourist.
There are streets full of people standing against walls eating waffles covered in all sorts of toppings. Sweet, tart, you name it, there was a topping for it. And the beer... I swear my hubs was like a kid in a candy shop. He will always be a loyal Austrian beer drinker but he sure does enjoy a good Belgium, too. And how cute are those little Manneken Pis chocolates? There were giant chocolate boys peeing in the shop windows and the whole thing just made my 5 year old boy giggle. I lived in Switzerland so I know how important chocolate is to people, but dang, there are so many chocolate shops in Brussels with a sorts of new and unique treats.
Over all, the treat factor in Brussels was on par and definitely a plus for our trip into the city. Let's just say that those strawberry and warm chocolate covered waffles were like nothing I've ever had... so good!!
