A Viennese Christmas

As my husband and I start to plan our holiday travel plans, I can't help but go over all holidays past and reminisce in all the wonderous adventures my husband and I have been on. The question while planning a getaway is always the same... do we stay home and have a quiet Christmas? Do we head to Europe and visit family in Austria? Do we travel some place warm and have a destination Christmas, just with our small little family? With my husband gone so much this year, we have talked about taking a trip somewhere new {a place not either of us has been} and having a destination Christmas. I don't know about this. I think it would be too hard and confusing for the kids. Going to Austria is always a good time and one that makes everyone happy. Of course staying home is a great option and always the easiest. While we think everything over and figure out all the logistics of Santa, gifts and traveling during the holidays, I've had to have a look back at some of our time in Vienna {since it's so darn magical} during the Christmas season.

The Christkindlmarkets, Weihnachtsmarkts or Christmas Markets are my favorite events to visit while in Austria, Germany and Switzerland during Christmas. And Vienna puts on a great market. There are many all over the city, with amazing lights, booths with items for sale, tasty European dishes, and music. There are usually activities for children as well.

Outside of the markets, just exploring Vienna and it's old world meets new world structures are a sight and experience. There are palaces, museums, operas, shopping, along with traditional and unique restaurants that keep you busy, warm and happy while visiting. If you're lucky enough to visit Vienna when there is a fresh layer of snow, it makes the city even more beautiful and that Christmas feeling more alive.

Some holiday activities that are sure to get you in the holiday spirit in Vienna this Christmas season are:
  • The wonderful Christmas Markets, starting December 1st- 25th, all over the city
  • Christmas Market Segway tour
  • Advent and Christmas Concerts
  • Ice Skating

  10. These photos are gorgeous. It looks like it was an amazing vacation. I really think it's neat how you guys mix it up for Christmas sometimes. Mine have pretty much been the same for as long as I can remember, my mom's house with family over... I cringe thinking of the day I'm married and he wants to spend it with his family lol Our holidays are so quiet...well chill I'll say my family is loud but we just hang out at home and a few times have been to movies at night. It looks like there is so much to do during that trip. I'm sure whatever you decide you will have a great Christmas this year :)

  14. What beautiful photos. I bet Vienna is ten times more beautiful in person. My husband and I travel during Thanksgiving and New Years, but choose to stay in town for Christmas. That's out tradition.

  15. Great pictures! I've always wanted to be in Europe for the holidays but never have... Since I can't travel anywhere for Christmas this year (but a baby is totally worth it) I don't think this is our year either!

  23. Oh this just looks amazing! I live in Brussels as an expat and I can't wait for another Christmas here in Belgium! We couldn't do much last Christmas as we had just arrived with a 6 week old baby and 17 month old toddler who got ill from the plane flight over. It was quite a boring Christmas but not this year!! Your photos are just gorgeous and I want to be right there amongst those gorgeous markets and snow!!! :)

  36. major envy over here, like usual. only a little less this time, b/c we are heading to austria this summer. i'd love your opinion, since you said you have family there, about an itinerary. do you mind? we will be in maria alm, in the alps, for a week, and while we are there we are going to hallstat and other little places. my conundrum is do we try to lump salzburg in during that week and then take an extra week somewhere else? do we stay in munich a few days, salzburg a few days, and then alps? or just vienna, salzburg, and then alps? this is tricky! any info and suggestions would be appreciated. my email is thecapeonthecorner(at)gmail(dot)com. thanks!
