Remembering to Smile

This is one of my favorite quotes. It inspires me... I'm notorious for living in the past and dwelling on situations when they're over. Call me a recovering pessimist or negative Nancy, I'm that person who will see the negatives before the positives, though I do see the positives {this is not something I'm proud of, nor is it the way I've alway been}. My husband will tell you that throughout the first year since we moved back to California I've said, almost daily, how much I wish we stilled lived in Europe. While I wish this wasn't the case, it is. But instead of constantly dwelling on the fact that I'm living back in California (a very lovely place to live btw) and not in Europe, I'm embracing the fact that my family and I had the opportunity to live in Switzerland in the first place.

I will no longer be sad that that part of my life is over, but smile {and appreciate} that it happened at all.

The same can be very true when it comes to death and the loss of a loved one or pet. While it's very easy to focus on the loss of someone or something as we grieve, we should try to focus on the idea that we were so lucky to have known the people we've lost or experienced the adventures we have.
I for one am working on this everyday and do have to remind myself of it. Even in the saddest situations and weirdest moments, I will continue to try and see the beauty and privilege in them...
& just smile.

I would love to hear of some of the things you might be struggling to get over or simply smile about.

Have a wonderful Tuesday!

  1. I love this quote! Moving can be difficult. Once I moved back to San Diego from Orange County it took me about a year to get over it & be truly happy. :]

  2. So true! We have to make the most of the situation whether it is good or bad, learn from it and move on.

  3. This is a great post! It is so easy to focus on the negatives, but if you stop for a moment, you can turn almost every situation into something positive. Focusing on the positives and the good things in life will help you live a more balanced life. Thanks for sharing!

  6. I struggle with this too. I'm always dwelling on the past, thinking about what I should have said, could have done differently etc.

  8. I think it takes great courage to implement these quotes. And hats off to you for actually doing it! I find myself in phases concerning past; sometimes I'm nostalgic about the good stuff while some times at the bad stuff. So I guess it's balanced for now.
