Here's a basic and quick 411 on how StumbleUpon works... first you sign up with an account, simple enough. You make a profile and add a picture like you would with any other social account. Then, you pick different categories of interest, say, travel, and then SU will find pages from the web all about travel just for you. Once you've read that page or seen enough, you simply rate the page with a thumbs up or thumbs down and hit the stumble button at the top of your screen and a new page -about travel- will pop up. Cool right? Also, all your liked pages will be saved for referencing at a later time.
Here's how all this benefits bloggers... if you have a blog or website you want others stumbling your pages. The more thumbs up your blog pages get, the more likely your site is going to be stumbled by other people. The chances of your pages getting stumbled grow larger each time your pages are stumbled. And heck, if you don't want to have a StumbleUpon account, you can just add the SU button to your blog so that those of us on SU can stumble your content. However, I will say that I've heard it is more beneficial to be active on SU in order for your pages to do well but I'm not sure how accurate that is, just saying.
Here's the difference between Pinterest and StumbleUpon. When you post something to Pinterest, pinners can go pin crazy on your pins but not actually be linking back to your original post for content. I do it, you know, pin for later. So the blogger or site owner doesn't actually get the page views right away. With StumbleUpon, the blogger gets the pageview {and potential new reader/follower} immediately. Now, I have seen bloggers complain that because stumbles happen so fast {page views go up}, the time readers are spending on their blog goes down. However, the benefit of getting new readers and exposure to the site might outway that a bit.
With more and more people joining SU and stumbling pages on the web, the more exposure this brings to bloggers. I have seen huge increases in my numbers since joining SU last year. StumbleUpon is my number one traffic source and has been for months, with Pinterest in second. I don't spend nearly as much time on SU as I do Pinterest, but if you take time out of your day to join Facebook groups and pinning groups, then I think StumbleUpon should be on that list, too. At the very least adding a button to your blog so that your content can get stumbled can't hurt!
Oh, and for those of you who do decide to join the stumbling club, you can add an extension to your Google Chrome to make stumbling pages even easier! ... https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/stumbleupon/kcahibnffhnnjcedflmchmokndkjnhpg?hl=en
***Just a sidenote, this is seriously a very basic intro to SU, there is a bit more to know about how it works {ie: discovering} so please look to the site for more info! http://www.stumbleupon.com/about
This post was not sponsored, I just really want to see other bloggers get the benefits of using SU ;-)
I've been using SU for a long time now, and I do like it, but it's not a huge source of traffic for me. I know a lot of people find their traffic soars after they start using it, but I haven't had that happen.
ReplyDeleteI'm glad to hear you're on there, it just means your pages are out there for others to find. Thanks for stopping by, Marie!
Deletewow! great to know, I honestly have an account but rarely use it because i just didnt understand it and never hear of anyone using it! So I kind of gave up on it... Maybe its time to revamp that! Thanks for the tips!
ReplyDeleteAt the very least, add a button so that others can stumble your pages! This way your content is getting more exposure. I wish you the best of luck!
DeleteGah! I don't use it. Adding to my ever growing list!
ReplyDeleteGive it a try, it can't hurt right?! Thanks for reading!!
DeleteGreat post! SU has been really really good to me this month. I have friends asking about it, and this explains it perfectly
ReplyDeleteThanks! So glad to hear SU is working for you, Alana! Some months are better then others that's for sure! Thanks for reading!
DeleteHi Ashleigh,
ReplyDeleteIt's great StumbleUpon is driving traffic to your blog. It's been in my top 5 for a while now :). I hope you'll have continued success with it!
Thanks for sharing. Have a great week!
Cori
I hope you also have continued good results with SU! Thanks for stopping by!
DeleteI have avoided using SU because I didn't want people stumbling my page then leaving really quickly. After reading your post I realized that what you said is true - even if a small amount of people that come across my page stay there and look at things, at least they are being offered the exposure of my page vs not knowing about it at all if it hasn't been stumbled. Just another social media channel I need to work on!
ReplyDeleteYeah, I really had to weigh those thoughts too, but realized that getting exposure, at this point in my blog, was more important because hopefully people would see what they liked and continue coming back. Thank you for reading and for your opinion. I hope you have success with SU in the future, Ali!
DeleteHi Ashleigh,
ReplyDeleteGreat post! Very informative!
I have a SU account for many years now, but I started using it on my blog only a little while ago. Before, I only used it to find interesting articles.
I didn't see the point of using it before, but I read an article about SU and that's when I decided to put the button on my blog for my readers.
Your post showed me that I was right to put it on blog. Now, I also stumble my posts regularly.
Thanks for sharing this with us. It will surely bring more people to use it. Happy Monday! :)
I don't have an account on SU. This post was helpful! X

Okay, you convinced me!! I'm signed up, let the stumbling begin :)
ReplyDeleteI love stumbleupon! But it is definitely 50/50. Some posts bring me tons of traffic and others don't. Either way I am going to keep using it.
ReplyDeleteThis was good info! I added a SU sharing option to my page. Thanks!
ReplyDeleteTHANK YOU! I signed up for Stumbleupon ages ago, but just never grasped how it really worked.
ReplyDeleteI love SU! It definitely brings me a lot more traffic than other places.
ReplyDeleteI didn't know that stumble had a plugin and I will be installing. It's such a great tool for getting in front of more people! Thanks so much for sharing this post. :)
ReplyDeleteGreat Post Ashleigh...I signed up but never use it...I am not so techy and it just looks so complicated I left it alone,. but maybe I shall give it a second look. Thanks for sharing this great info!!
ReplyDeleteValerie
i use to be on stumble upon a lot before i started blogging and this is inspiring me to get back to it
ReplyDeleteLove this! Cant wait to try it!
ReplyDeletesigning up now!
ReplyDeleteI wish I could figure SU out. When I started using it for my blog I saw crazy numbers but just recently I have hardly any referrals from them. I keep stumbling and adding to lists but I'm just not seeing anything. But hey, anything helps!
ReplyDeleteI used SU for a blog a long time ago, but never had any success with it. But I didn't really take blogging seriously then either. So you convinced me to give it another shot.Signing up now.
ReplyDeleteMy last comment just disappeared - I have never used Stumble Upon because I didn't want one more thing to keep track of, but your argument for it is so compelling, that I will give it a shot.
ReplyDeleteI'm desperately trying to grow my two blogs, www.vixensquad.com and www.Mommyneedsavodkabreak.com. Thank you for explaining SU! I'll sign up tonight!!
ReplyDeleteOK I literally had no idea I could add my blog to SU to be "stumbled" on by others. I have used it on and off for years, mainly just to kill time when bored, but this is brilliant! Thanks so much for sharing.
ReplyDeleteI have been getting traffic on and off from SU. Once in a while one of my posts gets stumbled upon and I get traffic for a day or two, but then it's back to normal.
ReplyDeleteI recently wrote a post about this and I too was amazed about how many bloggers aren't actually using SU.
ReplyDeleteI have had the most random posts go viral but it's my second highest traffic driver.
xoxo, Jenny
I'm still not entirely sure that I fully get all the ins and outs of SU, but it has definitely been beneficial for my traffic as well!
ReplyDeleteI feel like SU makes my bounce rate really high, have you noticed this?
ReplyDeleteI totally need to use Stumble upon better. I am working on it, but I have far to go.
ReplyDeleteI've tried Stumble Upon but never really got the hang of it. I use it more for non-blogging stuff so it's still handy but I haven't figured out a way to effectively link it with my blogging. I hope you'll write more on this in the future? Perhaps give us novices a few more tips ;)
ReplyDeleteThanks Ashleigh. I've been a bit reluctant to join another social media platform but I might give it a try. Like you say even if it's just a button on my blog it might help. Thanks so much for the insight.
ReplyDeleteI had no idea this existed...this is amazing! I just started blogging a couple months ago and have been trying to find ways to share my pieces. The blogosphere is so saturated its hard to even know where to start!
ReplyDeleteOh glad this can help your new blog! Find me on SU and I'll follow you back! Try looking on Pinterest, SU and Google+ for tips on blogging! Also, I host a link up here on Thursday for new bloggers to connect! You should join us!
DeleteThanks for sharing your insight about Stumble Upon, I have used it a few times, and I had not put the icon on my blog, but will, you just never know. I followed you!!
ReplyDeleteThank you for visiting to share your lovely blog this week on OMHGWW!!
Hope you have a great week!
Karren
Oh My Heartsie Girl♥
That's great, Karren, I will find you and follow back! Have a great week!!
DeleteI agree. Stumbleupon is such an easy platform to use once you get use to it. Thanks for sharing this!
ReplyDeleteI'm not really into worrying about my numbers since I don't sell anything. Your post sounds like an ad, sorry. ....
ReplyDeleteThank you, I appreciate your opinion! I'm a member of a few blogging groups where people ask how they can raise their page views so I thought I'd share a tool that has helped me. Where as I blog for a hobby and make minimal amounts of money from it, I do want my content out for people to read... after all, that's a huge part of blogging... and SU helps me achieve that goal. I wish you nothing but success with your blogging goals.
DeleteYou emphasize numbers but I do this for free. Sorry but your post sounds like an ad. ..
ReplyDeleteThanks for the info - SU was on my list of things to eventually check into. I will now move it to the shortlist! :D
ReplyDeleteThank you so much for spelling it out. I have heard some things that made me unsure if I wanted to go there. You cleared it up and I will be stumbling soon. Thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteAgreed! I love StumbleUpon. Not only does it get my posts out there but it also gives me ideas ;)
ReplyDeleteWhat a great post! I recently had a fellow blogger tell me to try out Stumble Upon, and have recently started using it. I will be interested to see if really does help, it's always a struggle to decide what social media platforms to use and which ones not to. If only there were more hours in a day and we could use the all, right. I hope you have a blessed week!
ReplyDeleteThank you for this! I kind of find it all a little confusing sometimes, but I try to use SU. Even if it's just to find good/new content to pin/tweet/add to my Friday Favorites, it's worth it.
ReplyDeleteI just started using StumbleUpon through the blogging groups and I'm already seeing it drive a lot of traffic! Thanks for sharing :)
ReplyDeleteReally inspiring post - in going to take your advice and give it a try :). Thanks for sharing this, found you at Home Matters!
ReplyDeleteHmm...I've never thought to try it for my blog. Thank you for the information! I'll be trying it out for sure.
ReplyDeleteI LOVE StumbleUpon! It started out as a fun way for me to waste time and once I discovered I could add my blog posts I was hooked. It is one of my biggest sources of traffic as well!
ReplyDeleteThank you for sharing with us at #MommyMeetupMondays!
Great post! Pinned and tweeted. Thanks for coming to our party and sharing such an amazing recipe! I hope to see you next Monday @7 because we love to party with you! Happy Friday! Lou Lou Girls
ReplyDeleteI frequently stumble features from my link party, and have had some traffic when my own posts are stumbled. Thanks for the insights!
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing this article at Inspire Me Monday Ashleigh - I am going to feature you at this week's party! :-)
ReplyDeleteAt the recent Winter #blogahon2, we did a Twitter chat on this and most of the participants there either didn't know what it was or didn't know how to use it effectively (ahem!)
I believe I'm following you on Stumble Upon - perhaps we could be SU buddies this year!
I have been starting to stumble more posts and become more active in it. It's an underutilized social media but it has great return. I had huge spikes in traffic from a couple posts that got stumbled usually when I was on vacation and not actively promoting my blog anyway. It was a nice boost in traffic. Stopping by from inspire me Monday and hope you'll link up this and other posts with our Small Victories Sunday Linkup too.
ReplyDeleteJust stumbled this page for you ;) I have been using SU for about a month and it's a huge traffic driver for me!
ReplyDeleteThanks so much for this post! I was wondering if bloggers were still using SU. I set up an account with it so long ago because I was curious as to whether or not it would bring traffic, but I think you're right in terms of being active and seeing the #s go up. Enjoyed this :)
ReplyDeleteAwesome post! Thank you for writing this. I am new to blogging and to SU, and this is so helpful.
ReplyDeleteLinda
Thank u for share. I'm still wondering why I cannot add SU gadget on my blogger before.
ReplyDeleteGreat post! I only came across SU after seeing a huge unexpected spike in my traffic in Google Analytics - still trying to get to grips with SU, but posts like this really help. Thanks! xx
