Hiding my Insecurities From my Daughter


While chatting with a close friend the other day, we started talking about the periods in our lives when we felt the most confident in ourselves. As I listened to her tell me about how she felt, I thought about this question and really started to think about my answer. For as long as I can remember I have had some sort of body image issue with myself. Depending on the time in my life and the stage of my development, I have been self conscious and insecure. I wish this wasn't the case and I hate to admit it but unfortunately, even as an adult, I struggle daily with the beast that is insecurity.

When I had my daughter, I knew I had to do everything in my power to raise a self confident, self assured woman who didn't feel the way I have always felt. I've read everything there is to read about what not to do or say to a young girl so that she develops self love and security within herself. The thing is, I have the most wonderful mother who has always made me feel important, worthy and who worked tirelessly to instill confidence in me throughout my life, and I still turned out the way I did. I have been told that my insecurities stem from abandonment issues or came from a time in my teenage years when I was trying to find my place in the world. But I can tell you here and now that I have memories (that are clear as day) from elementary school, before my dad left and I lived a seemingly normal childhood, where I judged my appearance, questioned my place in life and just felt crappy about myself. Where did those insecurities come from and how do I protect my daughter from developing them?

The Ugly Truth
Here's the thing, as I struggle in my personal battle with insecurities, my daughter is old enough now to see how I treat myself as a woman. I'd be lying if I said she hasn't walked in on me staring at myself in the mirror as I stand in my underwear, picking my thighs apart and lift my breasts up. That she hasn't heard me say how I wished I was thinner, had thicker hair or clearer skin. That she hasn't asked me why I work out so much even when I'm sick or sore from the day before. But the truth is she has heard me put myself down, analyze myself and pick out my flaws. It's not just vanity driven either... I have talked about my role in our family, my career goals and failed dreams in front of her (not on purpose mind you). The ugly truth is that even if I say everything I need to say to my daughter and praise her and build up her self esteem, setting an example with how I view myself in front of her speaks volumes.

I'm aware that I can't hide everything from my growing daughter but an honest effort on my part needs to be made. She will be 10 this year and is increasingly more curious in her knowledge of a young girl's role in life. I'm trying to raise the most confident woman I can, and even though she is absolutely different than I ever was, instilling the basic fundamentals in self esteem and security within her is so extremely important to me. The struggle is real though, because as a parent, in order to set an example of self love, I first need to address the bigger problem that is my insecurity itself. And honestly, I still go to bed at night praying that one day I will wake up and just feel better.

Black Bean & Sweet Potato Burrito Bowl


Ok guys, this has got to be my new favorite go to dish when I'm feeling like something flavorful but easy on the waistline. I'm a big fan of TexMex or Southwestern cooking -living in SoCal, of course- and enjoy a good veggie burrito from time to time. However, when I order burrito bowls at places like Rubio's or Chipotle, I'm still very aware of how much sodium and fats are in my food. Plus, they don't have yams or sweet potatoes and we all know how much I dig a good yam, ha. 

This dish isn't too complicated to make but calls for lots of healthy, colorful ingredients. The flavors of sweet and spicy go so good together, you forget that this is a low sodium dish. Plus, it's vegetarian, gluten free and vegan. And pretty to look at! 

What you need
  • 1 tbsp olive oil or oil spray 
  • 1 yam/sweet potato, washed and cut into cubes
  • 1/2 tbsp cinnamon
  • 1 cup mixed peppers, cut into slices
  • 1/2 red onion, cut into slices 
  • 1 can low sodium black beans
  • 2 avocados, smashed 
  • 2 servings long grain wild rice
  • minced chives
  • sea salt
  • ground pepper 



What you'll do:

  • In a skillet on medium heat, heat oil and add yams and cinnamon. Cook covered for 14 minutes or until yams are soft, carefull not to burn. 
  • Cook peppers and onion in a greased skillet {covered} on medium heat for 7 minutes or until cooked through and lightly browned. 
  • Heat black beans in a sauce pan and set aside.
  • Cook rice according to directions. 
  • Prepare avocados by smashing and adding a pinch of sea salt and the desired amount of ground pepper.
  • Once all ingredients are prepared, it's time to layer this bowl! 
  • Start with rice, then top with yams, beans and onion/pepper mix. Then add a dollop of avocado and garnish with minced chives.  
  • Serve warm and enjoy with chips, salsa, black bean hummus or hot sauce!

Why Bloggers Should Be Using StumbleUpon

Ok, so I don't normally try to give blogging advice or talk much at all about the behind the scenes craziness that goes into running a hobby blog. With that said, oh my goodness why aren't more bloggers using SumbleUpon?! Seriously though! I see in a lot of blogger groups where people ask what SU even is and how it works, and I think to myself, how do you not know?! I'll admit it can be a bit confusing, but when I go to stumble (think pinning for Pinterest, we stumble for StumbleUpon) another blogger's fantastic content, it drives me bonkers when they aren't set up with SU. I really can't figure out why more bloggers are not using this great social media tool to drive up their numbers?



Here's a basic and quick 411 on how StumbleUpon works... first you sign up with an account, simple enough. You make a profile and add a picture like you would with any other social account. Then, you pick different categories of interest, say, travel, and then SU will find pages from the web all about travel just for you. Once you've read that page or seen enough, you simply rate the page with a thumbs up or thumbs down and hit the stumble button at the top of your screen and a new page -about travel- will pop up. Cool right? Also, all your liked pages will be saved for referencing at a later time.

Here's how all this benefits bloggers... if you have a blog or website you want others stumbling your pages. The more thumbs up your blog pages get, the more likely your site is going to be stumbled by other people. The chances of your pages getting stumbled grow larger each time your pages are stumbled. And heck, if you don't want to have a StumbleUpon account, you can just add the SU button to your blog so that those of us on SU can stumble your content. However, I will say that I've heard it is more beneficial to be active on SU in order for your pages to do well but I'm not sure how accurate that is, just saying.


Here's the difference between Pinterest and StumbleUpon. When you post something to Pinterest, pinners can go pin crazy on your pins but not actually be linking back to your original post for content. I do it, you know, pin for later. So the blogger or site owner doesn't actually get the page views right away. With StumbleUpon, the blogger gets the pageview {and potential new reader/follower} immediately. Now, I have seen bloggers complain that because stumbles happen so fast {page views go up}, the time readers are spending on their blog goes down. However, the benefit of getting new readers and exposure to the site might outway that a bit.

With more and more people joining SU and stumbling pages on the web, the more exposure this brings to bloggers. I have seen huge increases in my numbers since joining SU last year. StumbleUpon is my number one traffic source and has been for months, with Pinterest in second. I don't spend nearly as much time on SU as I do Pinterest, but if you take time out of your day to join Facebook groups and pinning groups, then I think StumbleUpon should be on that list, too. At the very least adding a button to your blog so that your content can get stumbled can't hurt!

Stay Healthy This Cold & Flu Season

Well, it's that time of the year again, that time when it seems impossible to keep everyone in my house 100% healthy. With school back in session after the long holiday break, I feel like everyone is sick! As I mentioned earlier this week, my son has been battling a stomach bug that took out half of his class, yuk! I've seriously made it my mission to keep my other kids {and myself} as healthy as possible. So far this Winter cold and flu season, I've been pretty lucky {knock on wood} to not have gotten sick. I thought I'd share with you what I've been doing to boost my immune system and kick those pesky sickie germ's behinds! 


I've talked a lot in past posts about my love -okay, obsession- with green tea. I swear that green tea is the cure all to end all. I wash my hair and face with it, and drink loads of green tea everyday. I read once that the antioxidants in green tea was powerful enough to keep you looking young {yes, I'm vain} and healthy, among other amazing things. During cold and flu season, I make it the most important drink I put in my body because I figure it can't hurt. But green tea is not the only thing I put in my body to keep me healthy. On a daily basis I also use the following:
  • 1 tbsp apple cider vinegar mixed with water
  • 1 B Complex vitamin 
  • 2 servings of fruits and vegetables
  • 1 serving of vitamin E
  • Drink lots of water
  • Drink at minimum 2 cups of green tea
Vitamin E is also an antioxidant property like green tea. It helps to remove free radicals and improve immunity. It also reduces cholesterol and the risk of developing cancer. Vitamin B complex helps our bodies to turn food into energy and keeps us alert. Apple cider vinegar, which I have also talked about as a wonder product, fights bacteria and can lower blood sugar. It is great for the heart and keeping overall health. And we all know the benefits of drinking lots of water.



I have tried so many teas over the years and yes, there is a distinct taste between brands. My favorite and go to tea has become Bigelow. If you drink tea then I'm guessing you've heard of {and probably tried} Bigelow teas. With so many delicious flavors, they're pretty hard to forget. I always stock up on plenty of different tea choices for my family, however Bigelow Classic Green Tea is my absolute favorite tea. 


Shopping for natural and healthy products this cold season is easy, thanks to Walmart. I was able to find all these products in one simple stop... which is great when you have a sick kiddo with you.
